This term thus far

It has been a a slightly mental start to this term: upon my starting back leading this group with the wonderful and marvellous Melissa Knight, we had some anxiety about numbers and needing more girls. This fortunately only lasted a couple of weeks, as we suddenly had 22 on the register, which is just brilliant! We have been working on building our group cohesiveness and having fun, as well as sharing theatrical conventions, and a lot of humour.

For this next part of the term, I am excited by our Occupying Spaces exploration and what comes out of our new group in this area. We also have two visting workshops coming downto Lewisham, one delivered by the Royal Court Theatre Companyand the other by Deafinitely Theatre Company.

We are totally spoilt!

occupying spaces

moments of great beauty as the bubble occupied mayow park - drinks and cakes to welcome our many friends, then the 9-12's whisked us away to picnics, beaches, wandering trees and crazy police. The call of the drums and whistle and from high within the hollow tree the brent knoll group conjured up the pomp and ceremony of the sherifs castle and led us up and down the hill and round the back to the perfect performance space hidden behind the bowling green - and after the queen bedecked in gold had got rid of the final one with an "off with their heads!" we finally settled under a magnificent tree to be entranced by the wonderful, poetic and sensitive performances of the teens. epic in scope tales of loss, love and friendship told with barely a word spoken - dont forget to come back next year and sign up for our summer university programme.

I think this Friday set the agenda for where we are hoping to take our Lewisham youth theatres. A couple of weeks ago we had a fantastic evening where 3 young people from Brent Knoll special school had visited our 9-12's group - and offered up some stories that they had created to be acted out, one young man was so impressed with the evening that he has now joined the 9-12's group. This Friday offered a different model of inclusion where 7 young people from our Brent Knoll 13 - 17 group joined the ongoing teens group for an evening of forum theatre - led by our young workshop leaders. The evening was a joyous end to the term, with the young people all positively engaging with the different groups that we had brought together. We have plans too further explore inclusive working at the Manifest in february.

Our teens group and the group for young people in Special education shared an evening of story telling/story acting. And what an evening it was ... exhilarating, joyful with beautiful moments of theatre. Thanks all.
