Grandchildren of the Blitz wins National Award
Post date: Wednesday November 16, 2011LONDON BUBBLE'S GRANDCHILDREN OF THE BLITZ WINS A NATIONAL AWARD FOR INTERGENERATIONAL WORK
At a special event held on 15 November in the House of Lords, London Bubble's Grandchildren of the Blitz was announced a winner of the Awards for all Ages 2011.
The 2011 awards run by United for All Ages were presented at the event hosted by Baroness Sally Greengross and compered by BBC broadcaster Fi Glover.
The national Award celebrates projects and organisations that bring together older and younger people together in different ways to build stronger communities and end the ‘age apartheid' in Britain. London Bubble's Grandchildren of the Blitz was chosen as the winner from several entries in the category Showcasing All Ages.
Young people participated in Grandchildren of the Blitz and interviewed elders to collect personal testimonies about history of Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Deptford during the Blitz. The project culminated in a performance piece BLACKBIRDS, which has had a successful run at various venues across Southwark and Deptford and will do a final run on 6, 7 January at the new Canada Water Culture Space.
The award was collected by Jonathan Petherbridge (Creative Director), Brenda Watkinson (SE1 resident and elder who shared her experiences of the Blitz on the project), Hacer Karababa and Asya Karababa (mum and daughter who both participated in the project).
Jonathan Petherbridge said, "I was very proud to have Brenda, Asya and Hacer there to pick up the award. Not only has the project shown that they are great performers, it has also cemented their intergenerational friendship".
Blackbirds will be performed at the new Canada Water Culture Space on 6th & 7th January 2012.
