Work, From Docks to Desktops

Work Poem: WORK-HAND
I just carried things ...
boxes and parts ... crates
and equipment ... Was not, say,
an Engineer ... In
the busy docks ... when
the ships came in .. to
unload ... there was fruit ...
Dates, tomatoes ... even
coat-hangers ... Some folk,
not me, used to nick
stuff, like wine and that ...

Work Poem: SHOE
Making a shoe ...
the thing to do ...
By a warm fire ...
in the dead of
winter ... Shaping
a sole ... fixing the heel ...
Handling leather with care ...
This self-help venture
is bound to warm the
cockles of my feet!

Muhammad's poem
Lovely poem Muhammad. Strong words, and evocative rhythm. I will show it to Simon and maybe weave into the script.

Work Poem
Squat and tug ... to make
it taut ... Pull and haul
Try your best ... hold ... grab ...
Keep the hold hard ...
even though the skin
smarts ... Make tugging an art ...
Hold ... bear the weight ...
Later, stand up straight

Progress
Another excellent rehearsal tonight working through different conveyor belts. Accelerating from custard creams, to fig rolls, puds, pens, beans and biros looks really impressive. And looking forward to seeing David's workshop.

WORK-man-(woman)-like
Last week was quite useful. We got off the ground ... looked at the opening bit. Relished being an interviewer ... The miming (with imagined mike and recording equipment) is a constructive exercise ... The masks on the interviewees brought in a new element: This is the face of the soul being interviewed - He she looks like THIS: what's there on the mask .... Like what we plan to do with ladders and ropes ... Big props those - we must take care how we handle ladders and ropes ... Can't wait to press forward ... Let's take a WORK-man-like approach!

Work the Magic
Last week's session was a step in the right direction. We must b proper shoals - leading, being led. We must know 1 another well: names & skills. ... Was overjoyed to get the script. Quite an interesting idea to use the actual interviews, to cobble something together. The intro grabs attention ... The interviewers can say more ... The answers r provided, but the questions r not articulated ... The big chunks of dialogue may b divvied up, so that there's plenty for everyone to say .... As the spoken bits r 'aired', the others could act out a lot of what's being said ... So there can b a lot of movement ... Everybody should mostly, as in BLACKBIRDS, b on stage all thru the play ... It would b nice if, in some instances, men played women, women men, children adults, adults children, etc. ... We might also add some MODERN DAY stuff ... Probably using, among other things, our work-history exercise, where we talk about a job we've had, in the last 10 years ... I need a solid ending to the play ... At the moment, the character Vanessa talks, at the end, and the play suddenly stops ... I want to know what happens in the end ... Perhaps have the interviewers thank the interviewees ... and some words to wrap up the story ... My thanks to the Bubble for the build-up to the story; the initial stage is over ... Now let's WORK the magic ...

Let's WORK on a Script
Hoping to have a fab session tonight with the Bubble gang. Last week was instructive ... the warm-up was cool. 'What r u doing' .... I am ... well, right now, I'm writing on the message board! 'Can I help?' ... Yes, u can fetch me the dictionary!! ... I also liked what we did with our props; how we used them to do sketches. Plus, the work-experience writing exercise was enjoyable. I have to do my write-up for Peth .... To get a script tonight would b swell ... The feeling I get from my Bubble experience is A WARM HAPPY GLOW .....

Back to Work
Eager to get back into things, after 3 weeks ... Going to try to recall most things we did, so that they r fresh in the mind, as we do our thing, this afternoon/evening .... Peth must have given themes/details a good thought - will b interesting to see how he's shaped a vision for the project ... Eager too to find any form of script, produced by 1 of Britain's finest, Simon Startin ... It'll b great to see all my Bubble friends again ... They make my day, and compel me to lose myself in drama and theatre ... Keen to b of a shoal, b a cog in a machine, act out tales ... For once, I like (getting back to) WORK!

Work 'n' Play
Hi. Correction: The title of the previous post should read Work at Hand. Or the 'an' in that wrongly spelt title, could stand for 'and' ... So the wrong title might mean Work and Hand ... Not so incorrect, I guess! So, that's cleared up then! Let's plough into our new post ... Last night was fabtastic ... Loved the way we bore into things like being a machine-part, being mechanical, making machine sounds, being with/without attitude. I liked being a wheel, with/without emotion, and I was chopping the sugar-cane with relish ... Thought I'd never stop. ... Enjoyed the sabre-game. Now I'm thinking, I focused on the blood curdling cries more, and forgot to be, say, faster with my sabre, so that Asya would cringe into feverish fear! Anyway, bygones ... Liked Robert's machine sound, Dan's use of sounds, the women's interview presentation ... I thought the men's performances were illuminating ... I quite relished throwing questions at Chris who was reasonably laid-back. The 2 in our background kept illustrating bits of the story, and I thought we were on top of things. It's a hard life, being a docker! You go on a strike, and they accuse you of horrid things! ... Questions That Have Not Been Asked: 1. Did dock workers suffer from any mental illness, as a result of their hard/difficult work? 2. Did crime gangs bother dock workers at all? 3. Were there many/any instances of sexual harassment? 4. How were ethnic workers treated? 5. What songs/music/dance came from all the dock work, over the years? ... The Work theme goes into a Play soon ....
