Astronomical: a city of darker skies brought over forty performers from different generations together to create a new piece of theatre, led by a team of young and emerging artists – director Julia Voce, writer Seriol Davies and composers Richard Flanagan, Wilfred Petherbridge and Sofia Paschou.

During summer 2009, Bubble led exploratory workshops with adults, children and elders focussing on the Year of Astronomy. The resulting piece, Astronomical: a city of darker skies, combined bold storytelling and choral spectacle and brings the beauty of starlit skies to a darkened London.
The characters journed through Rotherhithe, Deptford and Greenwich on a night when all the lights in London mysteriously went out.

Astronomical followed Bubble’s tradition, since Gilgamesh in 2000, of bringing a company of amateur performers ranging in age from 9 to 77 to develop this form of community performance.

The show was performed in December 2009 at The Albany Theatre, Deptford.
