At our second researchers gathering, our researchers shared what they had found out about factories that once stood in the streets of Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Deptford. Using a map of Southwark and our imaginations we strolled from Tower Bridge Road, along Grange Road to Southwark Park Road; coming across 13 factories on our way. These included Hartley’s Jam, Alaska Fur, Cross and Blackwell, Atkinson, Wood and Gail and OXO. During the evening John told us at Cross and Blackwell (food tinning factory) 2,000 onions were peeled per person, per day; a statement that brought disbelief from the gathering. Simon told us Molins at Deptford made weapons for WW1 and Jodie shared the stories she had heard from Patrick one of our story tellers.
